In this fast paced world we live in sometimes it is good to quickly let people know what a company does not do as well as what it does provide. We do not rent conventional upright bikes. By conventional we mean no road bikes, no mountain bikes, no comfort bikes, no cruisers, no ten speeds, no single speeds and no children's bikes. In 2008, this is a change for us because in the past we have rented Marin Kentfield hybrids.

We have several different options for rental bikes: Crank Forward Rans Fusions, recumbents (EZ-Sport, EZ-1 and EZ-3), upright tandems (Bike Friday and KidZ Tandem), and recumbent tandems (Rans Screamer and Barcroft Columbia). We also have adaptive trikes from Draisin (Draisin Plus and Captain Duo). Yes, these models are all specialty products which reflects our inventory.

When you are ready to rent, please call 703-938-8900 or write to john@bikesatvienna.com. If you send a written message, be sure to note the number and type of items that you would like to rent, the date and hour when you would like to begin, and the duration that you would like to rent the equipment. Knowing the height of each rider helps with the rental or the upright tandems.

Questions and answers about rental details

  • Why don't you rent upright (road, mountain, or hybrid) bikes?

We have always rented what we sell. It gives people an opportunity to more fully test a product and decide if they want to buy. In 2008 our plan to is focus more on the specialty lines of cycling equipment. Our move into “adaptive cycling” reflects our tradition of making products available that can not be found at other stores in the Washington area.

Do I need a reservation to rent cycling equipment?

Please call us at 703-938-8900 and make a reservation. We have bikes available most of the time, but to ensure that the bike you want is available, please call ahead even if you want to rent immediately. Also, if you have made a reservation and you cannot ride, please call and cancel so that the equipment can be rented to someone else.

  • Am I required to wear a helmet when I rent a bike?

Yes. Helmets are supplied at no additional cost with your bike, Burley trailer, or trail-a-bike rental. It is the policy of bikes@vienna to have all riders wear a helmet.

  • What do I need to bring when I rent a bike?

Enthusiasm and money. bikes@vienna supplies helmet, filled water bottle, sun screen, bike lock, and rack pack (to hold all the extras). If you own a helmet, you may prefer to use it for your ride since it is already adjusted to fit. Cycling gloves are also recommended for comfort and are available for sale at the store.

  • How is time measured? What is a half day and what is a full day?

Your rental is measured from when you ride off to the trail (fully equipped and ready for enjoyment) to when you return to the store. You are allowed a fifteen minute leeway for your return with no charge. If you are more than fifteen minutes late then we charge in one hour increments (pro-rated at the two-hour rental rate). For example, if on a Sunday you rent a hybrid for two hours and return three hours later, you are charged the two-hour weekend rate of $17.00 plus another $8.50 for a total of $25.50. If you return three and one half hours later, then you pay the half day rate of $28.00.

A half day is four hours and a full day is six hours or more. There are ways to maximize your rental so that you get more time for your money. You can rent early in the day and get five hours for a half day rental. You can rent in the evening and promise to have the equipment back in the morning at a set time. You can pick up a rental one evening and return it by the close of business the next day. We will work with you on these issues. The amount of demand for the service will determine how much flexibility we have.

We use rentals to encourage people to return to cycling. Our goal is to create a relationship with you and become your source for new equipment and service. We want you to have an enjoyable experience.

  • What if it rains?

Riding in the rain is not fun, low visibility causes safety concerns, and rain is not good for equipment. If you are on a ride and it starts to rain, get someplace dry and please try to keep the equipment dry. We will be understanding in handling your return time. If you are on a full day rental and the day turns bad, you will be given a rain check for the equivalent of the rest of the day.

  • Do you apply money paid as rental fees to the purchase of equipment?

Yes, but there are limits. Payments that you make for renting a bike, tandem, recumbent, trail-a-bike, or trailer (in the prior 60 days) can be applied to the purchase of the same style of equipment. That is, rent for a trailer applies to a trailer purchase only, and rent for a recumbent goes to a recumbent purchase, and so forth. In addition, a family of five renting bikes will not be able to apply their combined rentals to the purchase of a bike for an individual.

We encourage customers to try before they buy. Many a bicycle has been purchased, ridden two or three times, and then left in the garage or basement to draw dust. This can happen for many reasons, such as equipment that does not fit your style of riding, or is an incorrect size and therefore uncomfortable. bikes@vienna rents equipment to promote cycling as a part of your everyday activities.

  • Do you rent bike carriers for my vehicle so I can take my bike with me on vacation?

Yes, carriers can be rented for extended periods and rental can be applied to the purchase of a carrier.
